Java can be used in two ways:

Server-side:
Java servers are found all over the place. It’s a really powerful, easy-to-use language that makes server requests easier. Its main competitor these days is Node.js (JavaScript on the server side)

Web-side:
You can use Java Applets. But keep in mind that documentation is scarce and half the time applets don’t work at all (and they work 0% of the time on Chrome). Java Applets aren’t secure, so they have a reputation (not a good one).
You can compile Java to JavaScript using Google Web Toolkit or other Java>JS tools. However, the ones I found needed a big build step and complex integration to an IDE. I couldn’t find one where you write Java, compile it using a tool, and deploy it.
